In a previous update, we reported that Martin Webb was seeking the Labour Party nomination to be a candidate for Mayor of Sussex & Brighton - but he is now campaigning as an independent.
Martin is described as an entrepreneur, community leader and public servant.
The former Special Sergeant and entrepreneur is using his campaign website to showcase questions from the public, alongside equally direct responses. He is promising no manifesto fog or party jargon.
“What are you going to do to help businesses in Sussex?” asks Simon from Midhurst.
“This is something I’m passionate about,” replies Webb. “As Mayor, I’d work to reduce red tape, champion local supply chains, and make Sussex the #1 choice for start-ups and employers.”
From tackling the rise in homelessness to responding to question about increased shoplifting - “It’s become so bad, I think we might have to stop trading” - Webb’s says he will focus on practical solutions, rooted in his own experience running businesses and volunteering in uniform.
His website includes an open form asking residents what they’d like to change across Sussex - part of his evolving 'Sussex Community Plan' that he says will be co-created with the public.
Webb says he is trying to model a different kind of leadership: independent, highly visible, and rooted in listening.
“I’ll work with anyone sensible, across the political spectrum. This job should be 100% focused on making Sussex safer, greener, fairer – not about party politics.”
Martin Webb so far joins Katy Bourne (CON) and Benedict Dempsey (LIBDEM) as the candidates likely to be on the ballot sheet next May.
